Having had a bit of difficulty drawing people to Equality Florida meetings in the Tampa Bay area over the past year I thought a more interesting approach would be to have our local chapter team up to assist a local organization serving the LGBT community.
LGBTQ Connect aims to be that coffee shop for anyone who’s feeling lost, confused and afraid. They meet on Thursdays from 5pm-7pm and Saturdays from 10am-12pm at Trinity Lutheran Church (401 5th Street North Saint Petersburg, FL 33701). It is open to people of all ages looking for a space where they can talk about issues relating to sexuality and gender identity.
Whether you’re the parent of a gay child or a young person looking for a safe place to sort out all of this murky and complicated sexuality stuff, LGBTQ connect is a group run by Bob Greene, a licensed clinical social worker, that is here for you.
I believe that some members of this Equality Florida facebook group can spread the word of this group's existence so that they can direct LGBT youth to this group as a resource and so they can know of an opportunity to come speak about the issues covered at meetings such as how to get a job as an LGBT youth or young adult, preparing for college, how can parents come to understand their LGBT child, and how their child can come to accept themselves and deal with prejudice, volunteer opportunities in the LGBT community for LGBT youth, LGBT friendly events for LGBT youth/young adults such as coffee shops, bookstores, gay bowling or gay skating organizations and so on....
I believe that just by listening we can learn a lot more about our LGBT community in Tampa Bay.
